Summary
We are seeking an experienced SSRS Administrator to own, operate, and modernize a large-scale SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) environment. This administration
and operations-focused role will ensure platform stability, high availability, secure deployments, and automated release pipelines as the environment transitions fully to Azure IaaS/VM-based hosting.
This position is the primary owner of the SSRS platform post-transition, responsible for troubleshooting production issues, implementing DR processes, and enabling low-touch deployments so report writers can push changes without manual portal work.
Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and support SSRS environments hosted in Azure (IaaS/VM-based).
- Manage scale-out SSRS cluster configurations and load balancing for traffic distribution.
- Plan and execute version upgrades, patching, and server/environment migrations.
- Manage SSRS encryption keys, including backup, restore, and synchronization across clustered nodes.
- Implement and maintain SSRS security, including RBAC, Active Directory integration, and secure credential management.
- Design, build, and maintain automated deployment pipelines for SSRS artifacts to support Dev/Test/Prod.
- Enable repeatable, version-controlled, rollback-capable deployments and push-button deployments for report writers.
- Troubleshoot report performance and failures by isolating issues across SSRS rendering/execution, SQL Server performance, and infrastructure/network latency.
- Monitor system health, analyze logs, and implement alerting for execution performance, subscriptions, and resource utilization.
- Develop and maintain backup and disaster recovery procedures for ReportServer databases and encryption keys.
- Validate deployments with automated smoke tests and report execution checks.
- Act as primary escalation point for SSRS production incidents and drive root cause analysis and long-term remediation.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience administering SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) in enterprise environments.
- Experience with SSRS installation, configuration, and scale-out (clustered) architectures.
- Experience designing and operating load balancing and high availability for SSRS.
- Experience with version upgrades, patching strategies, and environment migrations for SSRS.
- Experience managing SSRS encryption keys across environments, including backup and restore.
- Deep understanding of SSRS internal architecture (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB, execution lifecycle, logging, caching).
- Strong troubleshooting skills to isolate problems across SSRS, SQL Server, and infrastructure layers.
- Experience operating and supporting production systems with an ownership mindset.
- Experience designing or supporting automated deployment pipelines (CI/CD) for report deployments.
- Experience working in cloud-hosted environments, Azure VM-based deployments, including monitoring, logging, networking, and load balancing.
- Strong experience with monitoring, logging, and proactive alerting in production environments.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to support report writers and act as escalation lead.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with Power BI and how it complements SSRS in an enterprise reporting strategy.
- SQL Server administration or performance tuning experience.
- Experience building CI/CD pipelines using GitHub, Azure DevOps, or Octopus Deploy.
- Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies in enterprise systems.
- Exposure to scripting or automation (PowerShell, Python).
- Experience modernizing or migrating SSRS environments to cloud platforms.
