Sr. Backend Engineer (Java / Kotlin)

Summary

We are seeking a highly autonomous Senior Backend Engineer with strong expertise in Java (17+) and Kotlin to join our engineering team. Operating within a lean, focused pod (2–4 team members), you will hold true end-to-end ownership of your features—from technical research and architectural design to automated testing, Docker containerization, and production deployment.

In this role, you will tackle high-impact integration challenges, connecting multiple third-party APIs simultaneously while navigating rate limits, diverse authentication mechanisms, and real-time data synchronization. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments with low safety nets, manages ambiguous requirements with confidence, and balances continuous feature delivery with rapid bug resolution.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and deploy resilient, high-performance backend services and APIs using Java 17+ and Kotlin.
• Architect and maintain complex third-party REST API integrations, managing OAuth2 authentication flows, rate limiting, error handling, webhooks, and retry strategies.
• Take complete end-to-end feature ownership across the SDLC, driving technical design, automated testing, containerization, and Jenkins deployment pipelines.
• Ensure data consistency and integrity across synchronized external platforms, preventing data loss, duplication, or race conditions.
• Navigate ambiguous or partially defined business requirements by conducting technical research, proposing architecture options, and providing reliable effort estimates.
• Write robust automated test suites (unit and integration tests) to ensure system reliability and regression prevention.
• Balance planned roadmap features with agile, high-priority bug fixes to maintain software performance without delaying release targets.
• Collaborate directly with product managers and tech leads in a lean, cross-functional team environment.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering with solid, proven expertise in Java (Java 17+).
• Hands-on experience with Kotlin or a strong willingness and predisposition to adopt Kotlin in production environments.
• Concrete experience integrating external third-party REST APIs, webhooks, and complex OAuth2 authentication models (not just consuming internal APIs).
• Strong experience building scalable microservices using Spring Boot or equivalent modern Java/Kotlin frameworks.
• Practical experience with containerization technologies (Docker) and CI/CD deployment tools (Jenkins).
• Solid background in automated testing methodologies (JUnit, Mockito, or Kotlin test frameworks).
• Demonstrated ability to operate with high technical autonomy, managing end-to-end ownership in small, fast-moving teams.
• Upper-intermediate English communication skills (B2 level or higher, written and spoken).

Nice to Have

• Hands-on professional experience with Kotlin in production systems.
• Experience integrating CDE (Common Data Environment) platforms, project management tools, or construction software APIs.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure) and event-driven messaging patterns.
